Why do Windows 7 and Windows Vista completely hide folders I locked?Windows 7 and Windows Vista do not hide folders you protected. Some of your locked folders may seem hidden to you because Windows moved them. Here's what is happening. Windows 7 and Windows Vista use a new security standard. Programs are not allowed to write to a variety of "sensitive" areas such as, for example, the root of the drive. If you try to lock a folder in the root of the drive, Windows moves the locked folder into a holding area called the Virtual Store. And when you unlock the folder, Windows slips in the folder from the Virtual Store. The Virtual Store is located at c:\users\[username]\appdata\local\virtualstore. If your folder was moved, you can unlock your folder from the program's list of locked folders or you can use Windows Explorer to browse to the Virtual Store and then double-click the folder in the right pane of Windows Explorer (Folder Password Protect will prompt you for the password). |
